A Musical Anthology of Bakhtiyari Tribe
Bakhtiyari Music: A Synopsis

Bakhtiyari music is the music practiced by the nomadic tribes of Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiyari, different parts of Kohgiluye and Boyer Ahmad, as well as in regions dispersed in Lorestan, Khuzestan, Bushehr and Fars. This pattern of distribution has also contributed to its influence on other traditions and being influenced by them.
Bakhtiyari music, however, has its own characteristics, making it one of the major types and repertoires of tribal music in Iran. Its content primarily deals with aspects of a cattle breeding and partially agricultural community and its social, economic and cultural traits, having epic as its most prominent form of expression.
Most authentic music of Bakhtiyari is traceable in central Zagros, especially in various parts of Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiyari, Khuzestan, Moguyi and Sar-e Aqa Seyyed and parts of Lordegan.

Instrumental Music
Karna, sorna, sorna-ye dobar, dayere (in Mizdej), neyshit, and ney-e chupani are the main instruments here. Most important pieces include music for festivities, plays, dances, and funerals (by karna, sorna, and dohol), and pastoral music played by shepherds with ney.

Vocal Music
Bakhtiyari vocal music consists of 3 types:
1. Free-metered songs, like sholeyl, balal, etc.
2. Half-free-metered songs, like chapi, nezami khani, etc.
3. Songs with definite meter, like Dayninay, Dayni dayni, etc.
According to its function, different classes are familiar with their own related music, and there is a gender quality vaguely defined by their practice. Particular names are mentioned in lullabies, wedding songs, and lamenting music (like gageriv). Some are for working hours, performed during reaping (be'oru), milking, and thrashing. Songs like holey holey are well-known among elders who believe they would increase the crop. Singing Shahname and other stories comprises a large extent of versified stories and chamber music. The elder gather and narrate their heroic songs and epic ballades of their ancestors, these include Alidad, Sardar As'ad, Battle of Tehrun, Battle of Shimbar, Battle of Monar, etc.
